Information

Jeancourt Afrino Stud was established in 2004 by the implantation of 87 South African sourced embryos. We decided to investigate the Afrino as it became clear that significant quantities of lamb will need to be grown in tough Pastoral areas, in conditions which have traditionally been used to provide bulk mid-micron wool. Afrino’s were initially developed at the Carnarvon Agriculture Research Station in South Africa. They are a white wooled breed designed to provide hardiness, fertility and growth equivalent to AWEX  listed contaminating breeds.

The Afrino was bred to deliver lamb and work in with traditional merino flocks in tough marginal and pastoral areas. They deliver excellent fleeces with 17 – 21 micron with 99% C.F. Afrinos will deliver fertility, maternal qualities, constitution for tough conditions, pastoral lamb, replacement ewes. Afrino foundation genetics consist of 50% SAMM, 25% Merino and 25% Ronderib Afrikaner (a white-woolled Fattail). The breed is performance-tested and designed to thrive in tough pastoral conditions. Please note the AWTA test results of out initial “out of Africa” ET drop Afrino Rams and Ewes.

The Afrino breed emphasise different standards for Rams and Ewes. Rams are classed on growth and wool quality, whereas ewes are classed on fertility factors: establishing a pregnancy, unassisted lambing, successful, and fecundity. In a dual purpose flock with an emphasis of 70% meat to 30% wool, it is the large kg of lamb per Ha that will return money from tough pastoral zones: the quality of the fertility is therefore crucial in this style of flock.

Afrinos do not need to be mulsed. It is in the grazier’s own judgement whether the F1 Afrino/Merino crosses need this procedure. We are of the opinion that any F1 ewe lambs that need mulesing should not be retained in the breeding flock.

Client Testimonials

Hello Megan

I hope your season in being kind to you. Ours is a lot better than last year & the crops still have potential for an average yield. Good spring rains would be lovely.

I just wanted to let you know how Bens 2nd cross Afrino lambs have performed. The ewes lambed in May 2009 & to date this year we have only had 109 mls of rain.

He drafted off a pen of 25 wether lambs & sold them at Ouyen today to see how they would go. The whole pen sold for $101.60 per head. Not a bad result for pastoral lambs with less than 4 ½” of rain for the year.

I have attached some photo’s of them with the 1st x Afrino-Merino Ewes. Feel free to use them for publicity if you like. Ned said they are magnificent lambs for the rainfall & conditions we have had.

Some local graziers have been very surprised at the size of the ewes & the quick growth rate of the lambs.
We are looking forward to our break away at the end of the month.
